Raging Light Review @ Correo Del Oeste

Raging Light Review @ Progarchy

"Considering the progressive metal scene's tendency to lean towards more extensive compositions for the most part PAINTED BLACK have devised very digestable tracks which keep the listener enticed and engaged. They combine the harmonious subtleties of OPETH, the atmospheric pace of KATATONIA and the bludgeoning force of DARK TRANQUILLITY to devastating effect but where they particularly shine is on the album closer "Almagest" a 17-minute prog epic. Ironically when they begin to dial down the vicious assault they are at their most captivating with eerie whispering verses and a more methodical pace."

Raging Light Review @Metal Horizons

"This group deserves a much higher level of awareness since they combine harshness and filigree songwriting to an exciting universe of sounds. Thumbs up."

Raging Light Review @ Rocking Charts
19/Dez/2017
" The main element which makes Raging Light so compelling is its laser-focused approach to songwriting. Where most progressive albums tend to periodically lose themselves in either a mire of tedious instrumentation or a cacophony of complexity, Raging Light strikes a flawless balance between dynamics and repetition. Phrases are explored enough for the listener to become familiar and comfortable, yet there is always something new or exciting happening. Guitar riffs will repeat, but may be picked differently or end with a different fill. Chuggy, syncopated passages will be balanced with a graceful synth melody or ear-catching keyboard or guitar solo. By crafting each song with a precise sense of balance, Painted Black prove that they deeply understand the way each musical idea fits into the song or album as a whole. Throughout the entire album, there is not a single section which seems out of place or forced, and with the album boasting complex instrumentation, widely varying textures, and frequently shifting rhythms, this is a feat which cannot be praised enough."

Raging Light Review @ ProgStone
19/Dez/2017
"Painted Black is the best band you've never heard of. Despite their general lack of widespread recognition, these guys from Lisbon, Portugal have been pumping out top-tier progressive death metal for over a decade, largely establishing their immunity from the genre's various pitfalls. From their 2005 demo EP The Neverlight to 2014's Quarto Vazio, Painted Black has consistently expanded upon their sound while never sacrificing a modicum of quality or originality. Raging Light, the band's 2017, second studio album, transports the act's unique brand of death metal to unfamiliar sonic realms, taking a multitude of risks while never completely abandoning their signature style."

Raging Light Review @ World Of Metal Magazine #10
25/Nov/2017
The album was also ranked at #3 on the list of the 20 best albums of November! You can read their review below (only in portuguese)!

"O segundo álbum dos Painted Black demorou a sair mas valeu bem a pena esperar. "Raging Light" soa a clássico. Talvez pareça que estamos a começar pelo fim mas esta é a verdade. Recupera aquela mistura entre o death/doom com o gótico da década de noventa (tão querido à sonoridade do metal nacional que na altura era boa produtora dentro do género) mas sem soar datado ou requentado. Soa a clássico. A repetição existe por algum motivo. Para reforçar quando as palavras parece que não chegam para passar uma ideia. Neste caso a ideia de estarmos a ouvir um álbum icónico que por algum motivo não pegávamos há imenso tempo. Soa também adulto, ambicioso, com temas realmente impactantes, dos quais queremos voltar a revisitar várias vezes. Excelente trabalho. Clássico. "

"...Painted Black's sound is remarkably elegant, always controlled and molded by Fazendeiro and his comrades, with Daniel Lucas capable of providing good voice performance both with clean voice and growl...." (translated from Italian using Google Translate)

Raging Light Review @ Terra Relicta : 8 / 10

"...Raging Light is a strong album that shows natural progression of this band. Doom metal elements are not so evident like on their debut album, but are still there. It's one of those albums that should appeal to many different types of listeners, it's recommended to fans of doom metal, progressive metal, gothic metal and death metal, to those who like some melancholy in music, but above all to those who want music to be technically perfect and at the same time also deep. Raging Light shines also because of a good production which certainly adds some depth and power to this already good release."
